Two West Berlin poster columns from 1985. They show the lively cultural scene there, both high and lowbrow. I used to collect Berlin posters when I could get hold of them. I had them framed and hung all over my house.

Berlin poster columns in 1985. One is from Berlin, Hauptstadt der DDR, the other from Berlin (West). No prizes for guessing which is which.

Berlin Café Kranzler in 1985, undergoing a major restoration. This café on the Kurfürstendamm was a symbol of freedom and prosperity for West Berliners in the dark times when the city was divided. After reunification it struggled, and finally closed in 2000. The rotunda at the top now has a small café, but the rest of the building contains an up-market clothes store.

Modern artworks in the garden of the Martin-Gropius-Bau in 1982. The Berlin Wall can be seen in the background of the top picture.

Berlin Krumme Lanke U-Bahnhof in 1984. This building influenced other architects to design in this style, now thought of as a typical 1930s look. This particular building was actually demolished four years after I took this shot, and a new one built largely looking the same, but without the imbiss in front of the main entrance.

Berlin Bahnhof Westkreuz in 1986. As this station is mainly an interchange between S-Bahn lines, the building shown here was little used. It was demolished in the early 1990s.

From ‘Klub Der Volkssolidarität’ to ‘Sukho Thai’. Three shots of the corner at Bernauer Strasse and Oderberger Strasse, in 1986, 1991 and 2014.

Berlin Bornholmer Strasse 1990s. This station does not appear on the DDR-time maps of the rail system that I have. It does appear after 1990, and this platform in this photograph was a temporary one, before the station was properly rebuilt. The border between east and west went through here, and there was a crossing point for Berliners and West Germans on the bridge above.

Berlin Köthener Strasse at the junction of Stresemannstrasse just after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The wall ran along the front of the building in the background. This place is famous because Hansa studios, used by David Bowie and other rock legends, were just a few steps away.
