The Mitte district in East Berlin in 1979, this is a view from Kronenstraße across Friedrichstraße, with the many gaps in the buildings allowing the Axel Springer building to be seen centre left, which was on the other side of the Berlin Wall.

Berlin-Gesundbrunnen station in 1985. This entrance led to the then disused Ringbahn lines, and so was closed for the duration. A ghost sign for Deutsche Reichsbahn is above the station name. This station did still have Lines U8 and S2 running through it underground, though.

Berlin Bahnhof Neukölln in 1983. The date is on the poster to the right of the doors, visible in the full-scale scan. At this time only the U-Bahn line 7 was operational through this station. The S-Bahn lines here were closed, not to start up again until 1992.

Berlin 1993, the ‘Schloss Simulation’, an amazing construction of scaffolding and hand-painted canvas sheets, which first put out the idea to a wider public the possibility of rebuilding the old City Palace on its former site. The DDR Palast der Republik still stood, and is seen here on the left, covered with mirrored panels. The reflection increased the apparent length of the illusion that was being conjured up. Now, of course, in 2019, that illusion is being made reality.

Berlin Alexanderplatz 1979. There is a ‘DDR 30′ sign in the window of the Café Pola, which dates this shot to 1979.
