The Nelson Tower on 7th Avenue. Named after Julius Nelson the property developer, the architect was H. Craig Severance, and is from 1931. This tower was built right up against smaller 4 and 5 storey buildings, most noticeably a branch of Citibank, and an Irish pub called John Sullivan’s Bar & Grill. They sit uncomfortably dwarfed by their gigantic neighbor. Picture taken c1989.

New York subway 34th Street Penn Station. Moments before I took this shot, this staircase was practically empty. Then a torrent of people filling the full width of the wide entrance poured down like a tsunami. A very strange sight to my eyes.
